what’s going on?

  • The UN has described the Rohingya situation as the “world’s fastest growing refugee crisis”. Fleeing religious intolerance and violence in the Rakhine State in Myanmar, nearly 1 million Rohingya Muslims have become refugees in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

why is this happening?

  • The predominantly-Buddhist government of Myanmar denies citizenship to Rohingya Muslims and excluded them from the 2014 census, refusing to recognize them as people - BBC

  • Rohingya Muslims have been feeling Myanmar since the 1970s, with the most recent exodus starting in August 2017 when the Myanmar military began burning villages and attacking Rohingya Muslims after a group of Rohingya militants attacked police posts - BBC

what’s happening now?

  • Nearly 1 million Rohingya Muslims have fled Rakhine State, Myanmar to escape the large-scale military ethnic cleansing - HRW

  • Rohingya villages have been burned or destroyed, and their people have been forced to become refugees - BBC

  • The Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh have little access to aid, safe drinking water, food, shelter or healthcare - BBC

what can I do?

  • Donate to UNICEF to provide basic supplies to refugees

  • Sign the petition to stop Australia’s support of the Myanmar military

  • Sign the petition to hold Myanmar’s military accountable for genocide

  • Sign Amnesty International's petition to demand Commander in Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to end the violence against Rohingya Muslims
